Francesco Lentini, nacque a Rosolini in Sicilia, nel 1889. Quando la levatrice lo vide, subito lo nascose sotto il letto. Aveva tre gambe, quattro piedi, sedici dita e due organi genitali perfettamente funzionanti. Era quello che molti definirebbero “uno scherzo della natura”, eppure non si nascose mai.
Diventò Frank, “U Maravigghiusu”, e trasformò la sua vita in uno spettacolo di ironia e dignità.
Anatomia dell’eccezione
La sua terza gamba era il residuo di un gemello siamese parzialmente assorbito, un caso clinico rarissimo di “Parasitic Twin” ovvero Gemello Parassita, una rara condizione in cui un gemello non è completamente formato e fisicamente attaccato a un gemello completamente sviluppato e sano (l’autosito). Il gemello parassita smette di svilupparsi durante la gestazione, diventando dipendente dall’autosito per la sopravvivenza e il nutrimento, grazie a un apporto di sangue condiviso.
La gamba centrale era funzionante, il quarto piede atrofico. I suoi genitori, contadini benestanti di Rosolini, tentarono di farlo sottoporre, senza successo, a un intervento chirurgico per fargli amputare la terza gamba presso un luminare dell’epoca, un tale professore Ruggiero Busuttil, dell’isola di Malta. Anche questo medico però, come altri suoi colleghi italiani, reputò troppo rischiosa se non fatale l’operazione di amputazione dell’arto e le appendici in sovrannumero.
Vita straordinaria
– A 8 anni emigrò negli Stati Uniti
– Entrò nel Ringling Bros. Circus e divenne celebre come The Three-Legged Wonder
– Usava la terza gamba come sgabello durante gli spettacoli
– Ebbe quattro figli, una moglie, e una vita piena di viaggi, applausi e rispetto
– Visse fino alla età di 67 anni; molto per persone con tale anomalia
Filosofia del corpo
Quando la gente gli chiedeva se avesse difficoltà a trovare tre scarpe uguali, Frank Lentini rispondeva che il segreto era comprarne due paia e poi regalare la quarta scarpa restante a un amico al quale gli mancava una gamba.
La sua autoironia divenne il suo scudo, la sua arte la sua rivincita.
