Nate nel 1990 nel Minnesota, Abby e Brittany Hensel sono gemelle siamesi dicefale: due teste, un solo corpo. Condividono il busto, gli organi interni, ma hanno due cuori, due menti, due anime distinte.
Tecnicamente vengono definite “Gemelle siamesi dicefaliche parapagus”, cioè gemelle monovulari ovvero monozigoti, con due teste su un unico corpo, ma con una distribuzione interna degli organi che conserva alcune duplicazioni vitali:
– Due cuori: ciascuna gemella ha il proprio muscolo cardiaco funzionante
– Due colonne vertebrali e due midolli spinali
– Due stomaci, quattro polmoni, due fegati
– Un solo sistema riproduttivo, un solo bacino, e organi condivisi al di sotto della vita
In pratica sono due persone “relativamente” distinte, fino al bacino, mentre dal bacino in giù sono la stessa persona.
Fin da piccole hanno sfidato ogni previsione medica. Hanno imparato a camminare, nuotare, scrivere, guidare, insieme, all’unisono. Coordinando ogni gesto come una danza invisibile.
Nel 2024, la loro storia ha compiuto un nuovo passo in avanti: Abby si è sposata con Joshua Bowling, infermiere ed ex militare americano.
Ma come si sposa una gemella siamese? La risposta non è nei codici civili, ma nella vita vissuta. Joshua ha scelto Abby, ma ha abbracciato anche Brittany; e Brittany ha scelto di esserci, come sempre, accanto alla sorella.
Vivono insieme. Crescono una figlia. E rispondono con grazia a chi chiede, giudica, dubita:
“ Non siamo una sola persona. Siamo due. Solo che condividiamo un solo corpo.” (Abby e Brittany)
